This section is part of the HSC Physic syllabus Module 8: From the Universe to the Atom.
Here we will investigate, assess and model the experimental evidence supporting the nuclear model of the atom, including:
- The Geiger-Marsden experiment
- Rutherford’s atomic model
- Chadwick’s discovery of the neutron
Geiger-Marsden experiment
This was an experiment to determine the atomic structure of the atom, mainly the idea of a nucleus and orbiting electrons.
Rutherford’s atomic model
Rutherford’s model supported the ideas found in the Geiger-Marsden experiment.
Chadwick’s discovery of the neutron
Chadwick used scattering data to calculate the mass of this neutral particle.
