This section is part of the HSC Physic syllabus Module 6: Electromagnetism under Applications of the Motor Effect.
Here we will learn about the applications of Lenz’s law & the conservation of energy in the following:
- Magnetic braking
- DC motors
Definitions
- Lenz’s law: a law stating that the direction of an induced current is always such as to oppose the change in the circuit or the magnetic field that produces it.
- DC Motor: a device which uses a rotating loop and magnets to a direct current only.
- Eddy currents: the current that forms an opposing force to that of a changing magnetic field.
Lenz’s Law and DC motors
Magnetic braking
Magnetic braking is an application of eddy currents.
