Open vs Closed Circulatory Systems

An open system refers to a system that has open-ended vessels and where the blood and interstitial fluid (fluid around cells) are mixed together forming a liquid called haemolymph. A closed system has vessels in a closed circuit that is complexly organised around the body of an organism, with only blood going through the circulatory system and interstitial fluid being separate from the blood.

This video will go through open and closed circulatory systems.

Consider why larger animals such as humans cannot have open circulatory systems.
