The Hierarchy of Structure in Organisms

Levels of Organisation in an Organism Continued

This post will summarise the hierarchy of structure in organisms from the previous post for Prelim Biology.

Why is there a Hierarchy of the Structure of Organisms?

You can think of the levels of organisation as foundations for each other. Molecules make up matter which can take the form of bricks, bricks can be used to build houses but you also need cement, lights, electricity and etc are all necessary to ensure a comfortable home, an organism is similar. It is a make-up of complex chemical interactions in cells which power tissues that form organs which go into organ systems. Organ systems cannot exist without organs and organs cannot exist without tissues and so on.

This video offers a good summary of the hierarchy of structures in an organism. (note that it explores beyond the level of the organism, it explores all the biological levels which may be beneficial to your understanding)
