Diffusion and Osmosis
This post will introduce the concept of diffusion and osmosis for Prelim Biology, as an introduction to cell function.
Topic: Cell Function
- Investigate the way in which materials can move into and out of cells
- Conducting a practical investigation modelling diffusion and osmosis
What is Diffusion?
Diffusion is the act of substances in solution moving from areas of high concentration to areas of low concentration. It is a form of passive transport meaning, it requires no energy to occur. This video will go through diffusion in a little more detail.
This video shows a practical that may help you understand diffusion.

What is Osmosis?
Osmosis is another form of passive transport, osmosis is the act of water moving from an area with low solute concentration to an area with high solute concentration. Essentially, water will go to the place where there is more solute. This video will go through osmosis in a little more detail.
This video is a little practical for osmosis.
