Digestion in Mammals

Mammals and Digestion

This post will go through digestion in mammals for Prelim Biology.

Topic: Nutrient and Gas Requirements

  • Trace the digestion of foods in a mammalian digestive system, including:
    • Physical digestion
    • Chemical digestion
    • Absorption of nutrients, minerals and water
    • Elimination of solid waste

Physical and Chemical Digestion

Digestion involves the process of breaking down food which is necessary so as to maximise the amount of nutrients that an organism can receive from the food. This stage of breaking down has physical (mechanically breaking down food) and chemical (enzyme induced breakdown) digestion.

This video will go through the differences between chemical and physical digestion.

The Digestive System

There are several stages of the digestive system, ingestion (intake of food), digestion (breaking down of food), absorption (absorbing nutrients from the food) and excretion (removal of waste from undigested food). This video will go through how the digestive system works.
