Enthalpy vs Entropy
This post will introduce the first dot point of the final topic for Prelim Chemistry which is about entropy and Gibbs free energy.
Topic: Entropy and Gibbs Free Energy
- Analyse the differences between entropy and enthalpy
- Use modelling to illustrate entropy changes in reactions
What is Entropy?
Entropy describes the level of disorder in a system. Things will always go towards greater disorder, for example think of your room (unless you are very tidy), you clean it but then after 2 weeks you find yourself again in a messy room. This video introduces the concept of entropy.
This video goes through entropy in a little more detail.
Enthalpy vs Entropy
Recall the definitions of both, enthalpy refers to the energy of bonds in a molecule while entropy describes the level of a disorder of a system. This video goes through more detail about the differences between enthalpy and entropy.
