Common Chemical Reactions

What Kind of Chemical Reactions are There?

This post will go through some common chemical reactions for Prelim Chemistry.

Topic: Chemical Reactions

  • Conduct investigations to predict and identify the products of a range of reactions, for example:
    • Synthesis
    • Decomposition
    • Combustion
    • Precipitation
    • Acid/base reactions
    • Acid/carbonate reactions

Introducing Chemical Reaction Types

This video will go through some basic types of chemical reactions. Precipitation is a kind of double-displacement reaction, where one of the products is an insoluble precipitate.

Acid Reactions

The acid reactions should be memorised, they are generalised as follows:

acid + metal -> salt + hydrogen gas

acid + base -> salt + water

acid + carbonate -> salt + water + carbon dioxide

This video goes through acids reacting with metals.

This video looks at acid and base reactions.

This video looks at acid and carbonate reactions.
