Overview of the Mitochondria is a part of the VCE Biology area of study ‘How do Cellular Processes Work?’ and subtopic ‘Cellular Respiration’. The mitochondria is the site of cellular respiration.
How is the Mitochondria Structured?
The mitochondria has a double membrane which separates the organelle into compartments. There are four. These are the:
- Outer membrane
- Intermembrane space
- Inner membrane
- Matrix
Each compartment has a different function in the process of respiration. Watch this video for a description of the features of the mitochondria.
How Does the Mitochondria Produce Energy?
This video explains the process of energy production within this organelle.
