Qualitative Treatment of Changing Allele Frequencies

Qualitative Treatment of Changing Allele Frequencies is a part of the VCE Biology area of study ‘How do Cells Communicate?’ and subtopic ‘Changes in the Genetic Makeup of a Population’. In this post, we look at how a gene pool can change due to mutations, such as:

  • point mutations
  • frameshift mutations
  • block mutations
  • chromosomal abnormalities such as aneuploidy and polyploidy

The gene pool can also change because of environmental selection pressures, gene flow and genetic drift caused by bottleneck and founder effects.

What are Gene Mutations?

Watch this video to learn about point, frameshift and block mutations.

What are Chromosomal Abnormalities?

Watch this video to learn about abnormalities such as polyploidy.

What is nondisjunction in meiosis? Watch this video to find out more.

Gene Flow and Genetic Drift

Gene flow is the process of alleles going from one population to another. Genetic drift is the alteration of allele frequency in a gene pool. Watch this video to learn more.

What is a Population Limiting Factor?

This video defines population limiting factors.

This video goes through some population limiting factors.
