Qualitative Investigations to Test for the Presence of Functional Groups

This is part of the HSC Chemistry course under the topic of Analysis of Inorganic Substances.

In this post, we conduct qualitative investigations to test for the presence in organic molecules of the following functional groups:

  • Carbon–carbon double bonds
  • Hydroxyl groups
  • Carboxylic acids

Alkenes: Carbon-Carbon Double Bonds

A video on the qualitative investigation to test for the presence of alkenes in organic molecules, using bromine water.

Alcohols: Hydroxyl Groups

A video on the qualitative investigations to test for the presence of a hydroxyl group in organic molecules, using an esterification test and a ceric ammonium nitrate test.

Carboxylic Acids: Carboxyl Group

A video on the qualitative investigations to test for the presence of a carboxyl group in organic molecules, using a litmus test, sodium bicarbonate test and ester test.
