The National Assessment Program – Literacy and Numeracy (NAPLAN) is an annual national assessment for all students in Years 3, 5, 7, and 9, and is the only nationwide assessment that all Australian children undertake.
Your child will be assessed on the following: writing, reading, conventions of language and numeracy.

Before diving into NAPLAN tutoring, it’s important to understand the test format and structure. The NAPLAN test is divided into four areas: Reading, Writing, Language Conventions (spelling, grammar, and punctuation), and Numeracy. Each area has its own set of questions that students need to answer within a specific time frame.
The Reading section assesses a student’s comprehension skills through various texts such as narratives, poems, reports or descriptions. The Writing section evaluates a student’s ability to write in different text types such as persuasive or narrative writing. In Language Conventions, students are tested on their spelling, grammar, and punctuation skills through multiple-choice questions. Meanwhile, the Numeracy section measures a student’s mathematical abilities across several areas including number and algebra, measurement and geometry, and statistics and probability.
Understanding the format of each section can help students prepare more effectively for the test by focusing on the areas where they need improvement. It also helps tutors tailor their lessons based on each student’s strengths and weaknesses.

What is Art of Smart’s NAPLAN Ninjas?
NAPLAN Ninjas is a unique Literacy and Numeracy package that helps students approach all four NAPLAN tests with confidence! The unique resources and test papers have been specifically planned and designed by classroom educators to consolidate skills and concepts assessed in the NAPLAN test.
Prior to commencing, our individual and targeted tutoring, Year 3 and 5 students sit a diagnostic assessment aligned to the Australian Curriculum. Results are compiled, outlining concepts that have been understood and misunderstood. This information is then used by the tutor to support students in their specific area of need.
Our NAPLAN Ninjas Program differentiates the curriculum so that content being taught is digestible and refreshingly challenging for each individual student!
How does getting NAPLAN tutoring work?
Students may wish to get tutoring for a specific section of the exams or the whole set of exams. Art of Smart caters to both options!
How many lessons per week and which section of the exam you should get tutoring for will depend on your child’s confidence, achievement and the amount of time remaining prior to the testing window.
We recommend doing the following:
Step 1: Pre-Assess Your Child
If your child is in Year 5 or beyond, we recommend looking at their previous NAPLAN data to determine some areas of opportunity. For example, if your child performed above state average for writing but was below state average for numeracy, we recommend a heavy emphasis on numeracy skills in the lead up to the testing window.
NAPLAN tests content that students should have been taught in the years prior at school, and also tests some concepts they have been taught at a higher year level. This allows both parents and teachers to determine an area of focus.
Step 2: Determine the Remaining Time Until The Testing Window
Our NAPLAN Ninjas course has been designed to be undertaken in 10 weeks. However, if you are starting NAPLAN tutoring less than 10 weeks out, determine what are your child’s strengths and areas of opportunity and utilise the schedule to organise your lessons.

How is our NAPLAN Ninjas program structured?
The ten-week NAPLAN tutoring program is broken down into 2 x 45 minute Literacy and Numeracy weekly sessions.
Both sessions focus on the fundamental skills and concepts students will need to know in order to approach the NAPLAN Assessments with confidence.
Sessions are specifically tailored to meet the needs of each student. Tutors work one-on-one with individual students.
NAPLAN Ninjas Formative and Summative Assessment
Students will complete a formative assessment (week 1) and summative assessment (week 10). The results will be compiled and provide tutors with data to guide the teaching of content, skills and concepts over the 8-week course duration that is personalised, targeted and differentiated to meet individual needs.
Tutors will teach students to:
- Pace their test experience to allow more time for the most challenging questions found at the end of the test
- Attempt all items and read each question more than once to identify the relevant information
- Translate word problems into mathematical or algebraic expressions to clarify what needs to be calculated
- Explore the language associated with each operation, as well as commonalities in words.
- Double-check answers for accuracy and reasonableness
- Flag items they cannot readily answer so that they can return later if time permits
- Employ visualisation, spatial recognition, line measurement and estimation whilst problem
solving
Weekly quizzes will also be conducted online to further build test stamina and allow students to familiarise themselves with the online conditions of the NAPLAN test!
