English Skills for Year 3 Students

Since your child is in Year 3, the main punctuation concepts they’ll be working through are quotation marks, capital letters and apostrophes, while continuing to develop their skills in concepts they learned in earlier years.

Aside from these punctuation skills, they’ll continue to develop their vocabulary and reading skills.

Vocabulary

In expanding their ability to communicate with others through their English classes, your child will continue to extend their vocabulary.

As they come across newer words, this will enable them to verbalise or write about complex ideas.

Learn about the different methods you can use to help your child improve their vocabulary!

An easy way to supplement their vocabulary is from helping them to learn words from spelling lists and using them in regular conversation.

Reading

Your child will become more autonomous with their reading and probably won’t be asking for help as much, but they may ask you for help occasionally!

Even if they’d like to read silently, it’s good to encourage every once in a while to read aloud and let you provide feedback about their pacing and punctuation emphasis.

Punctuation Use Through Quotation Marks, Apostrophes and Capital Letters

This year, your child will already be aware of how they are meant to use apostrophes and capital letters in sentence structures.

However, a punctuation type they may not be as familiar with is quotation marks!

Quotation marks are used when something is being said aloud and a dialogue tag is also used to show who said it.

You can check out our Year 3 Punctuation worksheets below — they also incorporate sheets on quotation marks!
