English Skills

Now that your child is in Year 2, they will be developing a solid understanding of punctuation through the use of commas, apostrophes and capital letters.

On top of these concepts, they’ll be building their vocabulary, developing their reading ability, and becoming familiar with more aspects of punctuation.

Vocabulary

Communicating with others, whether by speaking or writing, having a strong vocabulary is a must!

Understanding the use of words in various contexts will allow your child to create basic sentences and converse with their peers.

Check out the different strategies you can use to help your child develop their vocabulary!

A practical method of building vocabulary can be derived from learning words from spelling lists and incorporating those words into daily conversations.

Reading

At this stage, your child will continue to build their independence with reading, but they may look to you for a helping hand here and there.

Getting them to read aloud every now and then will help to increase their fluency and allow you to give them feedback during times they need to emphasise punctuation or change their tone when reading.

Peruse our list of texts recommended for Year 2 students!

Comprehension

Understanding what you read is super important in the NAPLAN Reading section, so let’s work on making your child better at it!

This means spending time reading together and talking about the story to make sure they really get what it’s all about!

When your child reads a book (especially one from our list), you can:

  • Listen while they read out loud
  • Help them discover hints in the story
  • Read the book again
  • Discuss what happened in the story

Punctuation Use Through Commas, Apostrophes and Capital Letters

In Year 2, your child will already be familiar with the uses of question marks and exclamation marks when creating sentences.

Other types of punctuation they will be using more often are commas and apostrophes, which we’ve created worksheets for below!

Commas are typically used to indicate when a pause is needed, as well as when writing lists. Apostrophes are a way of indicating possession.
