Year 4 English Skills

Now that your child is in Year 4, their English punctuation lessons will heavily focus on apostrophes, quotation marks, colons, semicolons and clauses. They will also refine their knowledge of previous punctuation concepts they have learned.

Additionally, they’ll broaden their vocabulary and reading skills to improve their literacy overall.

Vocabulary

As your child enhances their communication skills through interacting with peers and their teacher in English classes, they will continue to build on their vocabulary.

When encountering unfamiliar words, they will be able to start using more complex terminology in their everyday interactions.

Check out the different methods you can use to help your child improve their vocabulary!

Another way to boost their vocabulary is by guiding them through using spelling lists and incorporating words learnt into regular conversation.

Reading

At this stage of primary school, you may find that your child won’t really want to ask for help with reading, and may only come to you when they really aren’t sure about particular words.

While they may prefer to read independently, it doesn’t hurt to ask them to read aloud and provide any feedback about emphasising punctuation and using different tones.

Punctuation Use Through Apostrophes, Quotation Marks, Colons, Semicolons and Clauses

In Year 4, your child will be already familiar with the foundational uses of apostrophes and quotation marks when it comes to forming sentences. Though, they may not be very familiar with how to use colons and semicolons, as well as how clauses work.

Colons can be used in different ways:

  • Introducing a list
  • Emphasising an idea
  • Introducing a quote
  • Subtitles
  • Time
  • Ratios
  • Greetings

Semicolons are typically used to join two independent clauses together in one sentence. They may also be used to replace a full stop or a comma.

When it comes to clauses, your child will find that sentences are made up of dependent and independent clauses. These clauses need a subject and a verb.
