English Skills

Before students are even able to spell, they need to have a good grasp of the alphabet and the different sounds produced with each letter. When they have that foundation set, they are able to start building their vocabulary and reading skills.

Learning the Alphabet

The alphabet forms the foundation of all language learning, so it’s important to help your child understand its function and the sounds of all the letters.

They’ll need to know the sounds made with the ‘hard alphabet’ as well as the ‘soft alphabet’ (also known as the phonetic alphabet). Once they can distinguish how each letter sounds individually, it’s time to start connecting letters to form basic sounds and words!

You can learn about 3 simple strategies to help your child learn the alphabet here!

Vocabulary

If your child has a firm understanding of the alphabet, the next skill you’ll want to build on is their vocabulary!

What’s so beneficial about knowing a lot of words?

Well, it helps your child communicate effectively with the people around them. Also, being exposed to new words and being able to use them in the right context will only help to build their vocabulary further.

Watching educational TV shows, engaging in imaginative play and reading are strategies that can be used to help your child expand their vocabulary.

As your child works through our worksheets, they’ll mainly come across words they are already familiar with, but the repetition will only reinforce their understanding of the words.

Reading Comprehension

Having your child fluently understand what they’ve read is a bit more of an advanced skill, but at this stage, you’ll be guiding them through their reading.

When they’re more confident with reading words and sentences aloud, that’s when you can start asking questions about the content of the book.

If you feel your child can read quite easily, some actions you can implement to develop their comprehension include:

  1. Getting them to read aloud
  2. Searching for clues in the story
  3. Reading the book again
  4. Having a chat about what’s been read

When you implement these actions, you’ll find your child being more engaged with what they’re reading, and they’ll also remember what they’ve read!
