Year 6 English Skills

Now that your child is in their final year of primary school, they will predominantly focus on learning about dashes, parentheses, ellipses and clauses.

While improving their understanding of punctuation, they will also work on developing their vocabulary and reading skills.

Vocabulary

As part of Stage 3 (Years 5 and 6), your child will become more familiar with other ways to communicate with people. While they may be exposed to words or language they have never used before, this will help them improve their vocabulary.

A great way to discover new words and learn to use them in regular interactions is through practising with spelling lists.

Reading

When it comes to reading, you’ll probably find that your child is super independent and won’t rely on you for help to understand words or how to pronounce them. They may turn to Google instead.

Even if they aren’t asking for help, you can still lend a hand by finding texts relevant for their year group.

Punctuation Use Through Dashes, Parentheses, Ellipses and Clauses

In their last year of primary school, your child will probably already be familiar with parentheses from their Year 5 English lessons. Though, they may not be as accustomed with dashes, ellipses and clauses.

Sometimes dashes are used to add in extra information to a sentence being written. This usually happens in informal writing, so they are not recommended for use in writing such as discussions or expositions.

Ellipses can be used to indicate:

  • A pause in speech
  • Trailing off in speech
  • Suspense in creative writing
  • That a part of a quote has been removed

Sentences are made up of dependent and independent clauses. The clauses need a subject and a verb.
