Year 7 English Skills

As your child enters their first year of high school, there’s a lot they’ll be learning which is very different to primary school. Your child will begin to have more and more assessments, and in these assessments they’ll need to demonstrate a much more expansive vocabulary.

Assessments

In high school, there’ll be a lot more take-home assignments as well as in-class exams — and they’ll be tackling these simultaneously alongside assessments for other subjects.

One of the major assessments they’ll need to complete, aside from assessments created by the school, is the NAPLAN. In Year 3 and Year 5, they would have completed tests covering Reading and Writing, Language Conventions and Numeracy — they will do this again in Year 7.

As part of the Language Conventions exam, your child will be assessed on their spelling. They may be asked questions like this:

Our Year 7 Spelling Words worksheets, which you can download, will give your child more practice with their spelling before they sit the Year 7 NAPLAN.

Vocabulary Improvement

Now that your child is in high school, it’s essential to develop their vocabulary and lessen the use of simpler words — as those types of words can become overused and repetitive.

At the same time though, when it comes to using more challenging words, it’s important to understand how they are actually used. If your child isn’t sure of the meaning of a word, and uses it in the wrong context, it may stand out and not make sense if used in an assessment.

By engaging in wide reading and looking up unfamiliar words, that’s how your child will continue to grow their vocabulary!

Discover some key verbs and adjectives that will be useful in your child’s assessments!
