English Skills

With your child beginning Year 1, they will have a basic understanding of what they are reading, especially from participating in reading groups.

They will continue to build on this skill and look beyond what is just said on the page, while also building their vocabulary, punctuation and reading skills overall.

Vocabulary

For your child to communicate effectively, whether verbal or written, building vocabulary is a must!

To construct basic sentences, students need to develop their vocabulary and familiarise themselves with using words in different contexts.

Check out various strategies you can implement to help your child develop their vocabulary here!

One great way to help your child build their vocabulary is through learning words from spelling lists and incorporating those words regularly into daily interactions.

Reading

This year, you may find your child beginning to read more independently, but they will still need your help as they read their assigned texts.

One thing you can do to help is allowing your child to read aloud so you can point out where they need to pause for certain types of punctuation or vary their tone. You can also ask them questions as they read to see if they are understanding what they are reading.

Punctuation

In Year 1, your child will already know the basic functions of using full stops and capital letters when forming sentences.

Question marks and exclamation marks are newer types they will learn about.
