How can I Prepare for Upcoming VCE Legal Studies assessments and exams?

Exams can be stressful. So how can you make sure you feel as confident as you can in your abilities? Well, we’ve got some advice to help you out.

Go the extra mile to ace your VCE Legal Studies exam and check out our tips!

#1: Get familiar with the content!

One of the most advantageous things in Legal Studies is knowing your stuff! Don’t get bogged down by all the fancy legal words!

Familiarise yourself with the key legal terms in the study design, and you’ll have an easier time understanding the questions, and how to respond to them.

#2: Learn from the examiners report!

Examination reports are reports written by people who examined past exams, that give advice and feedback on how students did, and what they could have done to have gotten higher marks.

These reports will often include examples from high scoring students, which you can look to to determine how to structure your response, and what kind of responses get higher marks. These reports are great resources, and you can find them tabled below!

#3: Read the study design!

Either print out or download the VCE Legal Studies study design, and make note of the key terms and key skills. Doing this can help you de-mystify the content, and give you a clearer idea on how you will be assessed.

#4: Work out a study routine that works for you.

Everyone learns differently, and even though it’s cliché, what works for one person won’t work for everyone else.

Spend some time trying out different study techniques to find out which ones really help you learn. This could be through cue cards, reading out loud, doing practice questions, or reciting the content you’ve learned to a friend.

What Should you do when your exam is Happening Soon?

Practice, practice, practice

The key to VCE Legal Studies is knowing your stuff! Keep attempting practice exams, and try to do them timed.

In your exam, you will have 15 minutes reading time, and 2 hours writing time. Try to stick to this time limit, to see how you go with completing every question before the time is up.

If you want to practice hardcore, try doing it under timed conditions, minus the reading time, to really test your answer speed!

Ask your teachers for advice!

Something that often gets overlooked, but is so beneficial for scoring well in VCE Legal Studies, is getting feedback.

Your teacher is there to help, so ask them to give you feedback on the practice exams you do! Their answers will give you a lot of insight into how to better complete the exam.

If you want to ask someone other than your teacher…

You could ask a tutor, or a friend! In fact, something that can really help is getting a study group together of fellow Legal Studies students.

This way, you can test each other’s knowledge, and help each other fill in any gaps.

Take care of yourself!

This means doing things like getting a good night’s sleep, and drinking lots of water. Try not to stress, any study you’ve done or are doing should pay off, so stay calm and take whatever comes in your stride!

Not sure how to prepare for the legal studies exam over the holidays? Here is how to balance rest and VCE study over the break!

Have a plan!

One of the best things you can do to prepare for your exam is have a plan on how to approach the paper. Work out what sections you want to do first, and determine what kinds of questions you will answer first.

One approach to this could be warming yourself up with some questions worth smaller marks, and then moving on to the larger questions worth more marks, to get the big stuff out of the way.

So How do I Start?

You’re going to want to practise this a couple of times with past papers. That way, you can find out what content you need to work on more, and find a plan on how to complete the paper that best works for you!

So without further ado, let’s get practising!

Here are some past papers that you can use to practice your skills.

Please note that papers from 2023 and earlier are from a different study design, so some questions may cover content that is no longer required. Check the Legal Studies Study Design to see the extent of the changes.
