What should you do in preparation for the exams?

Now, depending on when you’re preparing for the exams, the type of revision systems you would build would be quite different.

If you’ve only started the Year 12 VCE Business Management Study Design…

Tip #1: Print Out Your Study Design

You’ll want to prime your brain by familiarising yourself with the VCAA study design. Thankfully, these are readily made by VCAA which you can then break down into a checklist to tick as you progress in the year!

You can also learn the Business jargon by identifying the key terms and concepts in each key knowledge dot point that you need to master by the end.

Tip #2: Know the Exam Language

You should also master the VCE Business Management Exam question terminology like understanding the difference between terms such as to define or explain. To compare or distinguish.

Knowing the difference between these terms will elevate your answers to exam questions!

Tip #3: Create Short and Sweet Summaries

Save your future self the hassle by making succinct summaries of each area of study before your SACs.

Use the key knowledge dot points as headings and identify which information you need to know. It’s an efficient way to study for both your SAC and your end-of-year exams.

If you’re close to sitting your exam…

Quick! D-day has arrived! You only have a week, or even a few days until you have to sit your exam.

Tip #1: Revise the Study Design Using Spider Diagrams

The first step is to cover your bases and find any holes in your knowledge. You can do a quick revision by creating a spider diagram and breaking down the topics.

For example, let’s look at the components of operations management:

  • What is the role of technology in improving its effectiveness and efficiency?
  • What are the example strategies?
  • How do they improve their effectiveness?
  • How do they improve efficiency?

Below is an example of what breaking down this area of study may look like:

From there, identify what needs revision, using your printed study design as a checklist.

Tip #5: Use the Traffic Light Method

A helpful tip is to use the traffic light highlighting method so you know which topics will need the most attention:

  • Red is your weakest which means you barely remember the content
  • Yellow means you know the basics like definitions and explanations of some concepts
  • Green is when you can teach the topic yourself

If you’re unsure, a good way is to see if you can answer SAC or exam questions relating to the topic with ease, or if drawing the information is still difficult.

VCE Business Management Exam Structure

Let’s also familiarise ourselves with what the exam will be like so you won’t be caught off-guard on the day!

VCE Business Management structure:

  • Section A: Short Answer
  • Section B: Case Study

Section A: Short Answer

Section A focusses on standard knowledge questions that you would see in your SAC. This will look into your understanding of the concepts with minimal case-study-style questions.

To prepare for this, going through the key points of each key knowledge dot point is essential, such as knowing the advantages, and disadvantages, and how the strategies are implemented.

You might also be asked to refer to relevant case studies for your responses. You will need to know case studies like the back of your hand.

Make sure to remember which key knowledge dot points they align to. You can do this by making quick notes on your study design checklist.

Section B: Case-study

Section B, on the other hand, will see how well you can apply your knowledge in reference to a case study, as well as your own relevant case studies that you should have built upon throughout the year.

To prepare for Section B, you need to build up the skill of identifying the relevant key knowledge dot points to the case study.

You can do this by dissecting the case studies of the businesses you’ve learned in class. That way, you are killing two birds with one stone!

Exam Tip: Launch Your Answers Using the Question!

A valuable tip for structuring responses is to launch off from the question.

For example, if it asks you to suggest an effective strategy to use, you can begin your response by saying, ‘One effective strategy is …’

However, knowing the flow of how to write responses just comes with practice as cliché as it sounds. The more practice exams you try, the more patterns to your responses will begin to emerge.

Find out why you should be putting in the effort with practice papers!
