What makes Emelia a Trailblazer?

Emelia is a dynamic and passionate individual who is dedicated to empowering change through her pursuits in STEM and creativity. As a selected candidate for the 2023 National Youth Science Forum (NYSF), sponsored by local Rotary Clubs, Emelia had the opportunity to broaden her horizons in various STEAM careers, from micropalaeontology to aerospace engineering.

During the intensive 3-week NYSF program, Emelia actively participated in workshops, lectures, and competitions, immersing herself in the world of science and innovation. She interacted with leading scientists, gaining insights into different fields and even developed solutions for local infrastructure challenges. Emelia’s commitment and enthusiasm for STEAM were evident as she explored topics ranging from renewable energy to aerospace engineering, demonstrating her versatility and passion for making a difference.

Emelia’s ability to combine her creativity with scientific knowledge is exemplified by her involvement in NYSF STEM Challenges. She utilised her skills to propose innovative ideas that showcased the potential of STEAM in benefiting and connecting communities. In her proposal for waste management infrastructure in Coffs Harbour, Emelia identified opportunities to implement mixed demolition sorting facilities and ceramic recycling facilities. This approach not only addresses waste diversion but also supports community art groups by repurposing usable ceramics for artistic projects, creating aesthetic and artistic interest in the region.

Through her dedication to volunteering and community engagement, Emelia has made a positive impact on the environment and the lives of others. She actively participated in various fundraising and volunteering events, such as organising Bandana Week to support teenagers experiencing cancer and volunteering for a women’s refugee lunch. Emelia’s commitment to supporting her community is evident in her involvement as the editor and designer of the College Collective, a magazine that showcases the innovative abilities of teachers and students.

Emelia’s passion for public speaking and debating has allowed her to inspire others with her ideas and avant-garde concepts. She has delivered impactful speeches on topics ranging from personal legacies to strategies for improving infrastructure. Emelia’s ability to think critically and propose innovative solutions shines through her suggestions, such as outdoor gyms that generate kinetic energy and ‘green walls’ for enhanced sustainability.

In addition to her STEAM pursuits, Emelia has engaged in intensive work experiences in software development and Amazon Web Services (AWS). These experiences have equipped her with skills in 3D modelling, problem-solving, and programming. Emelia’s dedication to excellence in these fields showcases her commitment to continuous growth and exploration.

Looking ahead, Emelia aspires to pursue a career in STEAM, where she plans to innovate environmentally engineering solutions for the future. She envisions studying at the National Marine Science Centre campus of Southern Cross University, specialising in Marine Biology and Environmental Science. Emelia also aims to utilise her skills in game design and software.
