Presented by the Department of Defence, the award recognizes bright Australian students who excel in critical thinking, problem-solving, and innovation. Mia’s achievement in this award earned her a certificate and a $250 cash prize.
- Selling her body of work in Visual Arts: Mia’s talent in visual arts led to the sale of her artwork for $500, demonstrating her skills and entrepreneurial spirit.
What makes Mia a Trailblazer?
Mia’s achievements have had a significant impact on her educational journey. Selling her artwork allowed her to invest in her personal and academic growth. With the proceeds, Mia was able to take fourteen units in Year 11 and secured a 50% scholarship through an entrance exam and portfolio. To support this initiative, Isabella took it upon herself to raise funds amounting to $15,000. Recognising the need for a personal and impactful contribution, she decided to focus on reusable period products, addressing the issue of menstrual inequities faced by women globally.
Isabella actively engaged her school community in this endeavour. She shared her initiative during the International Women’s Day breakfast, raising awareness about period poverty and the challenges faced by approximately 500 million women worldwide. To fund the purchase of reusable period products, she successfully organised a plant stall and hosted a collection drive. Through these efforts, Isabella not only raised funds but also increased awareness of this critical issue.
While the distribution of the reusable period products is yet to occur, Isabella’s work has already made a significant impact by shedding light on the inequities faced by women and the crucial role that access to menstrual products plays in their lives. By providing these products, Isabella hopes to contribute to improving the lives of young women in Vietnam, empowering them to stay in school, feel valued, and avoid the challenges of menstruating without adequate resources.
Isabella’s empathy and reflection on the situation of these girls have helped shape her perspective and build her capacity for understanding and supporting others. This valuable skill will undoubtedly benefit her in her future endeavours, particularly in the healthcare industry, where she intends to pursue a career.

- Developed exceptional mental strength and discipline during her recovery period, which helped her regain her physical fitness and excel in her sport.
- Overcame Postural Orthostatic Tachycardia Syndrome (POTS) and managed to continue her academic and athletic pursuits.
- Engaged in various extracurricular activities, including being a prefect at her school, participating in field hockey, managing the school’s café, and actively participating in charity events.

After experiencing major heart complications, Ella made an impressive comeback by representing her club in the Division 1 competition of the U18 State Championships just 8 months later. Ella’s journey to recovery was a true test of mental strength and discipline. After months of physical inactivity, she had to rebuild her cardiovascular fitness and regain the muscle required to excel in her sport. The frustration and exhaustion she faced during this process would have worn down the spirit of many, but Ella’s unwavering determination and the support of her teammates, coach, and teachers kept her going. Amy is an exceptional young woman who has demonstrated outstanding leadership skills and a passion for sports, particularly in the field of dragon boating. As the voted NSW State Dragon Boating Captain, Amy led her team to an impressive victory, securing gold in all divisions at the National Championships.
Amy’s leadership journey began with the responsibility of leading a diverse team of nearly 40 members, ranging in age and coming from different locations. Through her humble, responsible, and kind approach, Amy effectively motivated and guided her teammates, ensuring safe boat handling both on land and in the water. She actively mentored younger girls, empowering them to become future trailblazers in the sport.

Collaborating with like-minded students from across Queensland and receiving guidance from PhD students and medical researchers, Imogen delved into laboratory work and data analysis. Her dedication and hard work culminated in presenting their findings to a lecture theatre filled with esteemed professionals.
What sets Imogen apart as a trailblazer is not only her involvement in cutting-edge research but also her contributions to real-world applications. The data she gathered during the SPARQ-ed program became part of Dr Yunis’ laboratory, contributing to real research papers and projects. Imogen’s participation not only advanced her own scientific skills but also enabled three PhD students to develop their tutoring and lecturing abilities, creating a ripple effect of knowledge and growth.
Throughout the SPARQ-ed program, Imogen honed her teamwork and communication skills, working alongside passionate and dedicated peers. This experience differed from regular school group projects, as everyone actively contributed and shared responsibilities. By the end of the program, Imogen emerged with invaluable skills that will serve her well in future collaborative endeavours.

Despite the stress caused by changes in her family and the possibility of changing schools, she persevered and successfully navigated her exams. What makes Patrick a Trailblazer?
Patrick, a talented individual from Orange High School, has made remarkable strides in the field of dance, earning him the title of a Trailblazer. Patrick’s passion and dedication to his craft led to his selection as a featured dancer for the prestigious NSW School Spectacular.
Participating in the School Spectacular required Patrick to attend multiple gruelling six-hour rehearsals leading up to the show. Additionally, during the week of performance, he had three full days of rehearsals followed by three days of live performances. Patrick’s commitment to honing his skills and delivering outstanding performances showcased his determination and unwavering work ethic.
What sets Patrick apart as a Trailblazer is his ability to step out of his comfort zone and seize opportunities. Despite being a boy from a regional and remote area, Patrick had the confidence to audition for the School Spectacular. This decision was not easy, as it involved traveling all the way to Sydney for the audition, with no guarantee of success. However, Patrick’s boldness paid off, as he secured a spot as a featured dancer. This achievement not only boosted his confidence but also instilled in him the courage to pursue other challenging experiences and take on new opportunities.
Undoubtedly, one of the greatest challenges Patrick faced during his journey was managing the demanding rehearsal schedule. Living four hours away from Sydney meant he had to travel back and forth for each rehearsal. This rigorous routine, involving early mornings and late nights, was physically exhausting. Furthermore, it presented difficulties in balancing his academic responsibilities, particularly during his Year 11 end-of-course exams. Despite these challenges, Patrick exhibited resilience and determination. He went the extra mile, putting in additional work to ensure academic success while excelling in his dance commitments.
Beyond his achievements in dance, Patrick actively participates in various extracurricular activities, including soccer, school dance, and local Eisteddfod volunteering. These engagements demonstrate his well-rounded nature and his commitment to contributing to his school and local community.
While Patrick aspires to pursue a career in finance, his experience in dance has undoubtedly shaped his character and provided him with invaluable skills. - Volunteer at Seaforth Public School’s Kitchen Program: Ella dedicates her time to inspire healthy eating and essential life skills among Year 3-6 students. One of Maya’s most significant achievements is her involvement in the School Strike 4 Climate (SS4C) and the Australian Youth Climate Coalition (AYCC). As a member of SS4C Australia, Maya has worked tirelessly in both organising and mobilising aspects of activism. She actively contributes to several working groups, including onboarding and recruitment, strategy, and social media and communications. The Trailblazer Awards aim to identify and celebrate students who use their final years of school to invest holistically in the skills and experiences that will maximise their own future opportunities and make a contribution to the future of our society.
