What to Do If You’re Running Late to Your HSC Exam

After preparing so much for the HSC the last thing you want is to be running late for an exam.

If you are in this unfortunate situation we’ve prepared a checklist of what to do if you’re running late to your HSC Exam!

Let’s get started!

Tip #1: Stay Calm and Prioritise!
Tip #2: Contact Your School Principal ASAP
Tip #3: Get to Your Examination Centre
Tip #4: After the Exam, Talk to the Exam Supervisor
Tip #5: Actually Fill Out Your Misadventure Form ASAP

Tip #1: Stay Calm and Prioritise!

In emergency situations, the least helpful thing you can do is panic. The solution? Take a few deep breaths and figure out what you need to do.

If you’ve just been in a car accident, your first priority should be your safety, and the safety of everyone else.

Once you’ve calmed down, here’s what you need to do, translated into simple English from the NESA website.

Tip #2: Contact Your School Principal ASAP

NESA states that if you’re running late to an exam for whatever reason the first step is to call your principal immediately.

If you can’t find the phone number to get in touch with your principal call the number on your school’s website and the office team can transfer you to the principal or direct you elsewhere if the principal is unavailable.

Tip #3: Get to Your Examination Centre

It sounds very self-explanatory but if you are running late for an exam, or misread your timetable, get to the examination centre as quickly as possible.

If you arrive late you will not be given any extra reading/working time so getting there quicker means you will have more time to answer questions.

If it is unsafe for you to get to your exam such as in the case of a natural disaster (e.g. the 2014 floods or 2013 bushfires) do not attempt to get to your exam.

Tip #4: After the Exam, Talk to the Exam Supervisor

When you exam finishes do no leave exam room rather request to talk to the exam supervisor.

If the reason for being late was out of your control, such as a car crash or natural disaster, you will most likely be eligible for misadventure. If the coffee line was too long, it probably won’t qualify.

Tip: Misadventure Forms are often found in the Examination Centre!

Tip #5: Actually Fill Out Your Misadventure Form ASAP

With so many exams it can be easy to forget about your misadventure form and never submit it.

My recommendation is to fill it out as soon as you leave the exam because you may be required to present evidence about your lateness.

We seriously hope that you’ll never be in the situation where you need to actually read this post because of illness or misadventure, but in case you have or need to again in the future, here are some other important things to consider.

If you are over an hour late to an exam you will be able to sit the exam in the time remaining but you will also need to contact NESA telling them why you were late and also that you had no knowledge of what was on the exam when you entered the exam centre.

Only submit the misadventure form if you have a legitimate reason. In 2014 over 75% of misadventure forms submitted about HSC exams were granted a mark change or bonus marks. This mean’s even if you don’t think your case will be accepted it very well might!

Running late to an exam is never ideal but we hope this simple checklist takes out some of your stress or confusion about what you have to do!
