# Transformers

This lesson is on Transformers, which is part of Unit 3 Area of Study 2 for VCE Physics. It comes under the subtopic, Transmission of Electricity.

Transformers are used to increase or decrease voltages and currents.

Basic formulae for transformers are the following:

\frac{N_p}{N_s} =  \frac{V_p}{V_s} = \frac{I_s}{I_p}

Note that current is inversely proportional to the number of turns and voltage.

### Power loss in transformers

As much as we would like transformers to be ideal, they aren’t. Some of the losses in a transformer are:

• Heat losses
• Eddy currents
• Flux leakage

To find power loss we use:

P_L = I^2 R
