What are Linear Equations?
An equation is a mathematical statement that says that two things are equal. The goal of linear equation problems is to move the pronumeral to one side of the equation, so that it is by itself without other numbers. In VCE Maths Methods, the steps to solving linear equations are below:
- Look to perform the opposite operation to get the pronumeral by itself on one side (+ is opposite to -, x is opposite to +).
- Add or subtract the same number to both sides of the equation.
- Multiply or divide both sides of the equation by the same number.
- To solve two-step or three-step equations, repeat the steps 1 to 3 as required. It is often easier to first add or subtract the same number to both sides of the equation.
