Residual Analysis is a part of the VCE Further Maths topic Data Analysis and subtopic Investigating and Modelling Linear Associations. It looks at using residuals to check the quality of the fit of a line to a set of data. It should be noted that the residual for each data point is:
- the difference between predicted values of y, as given by the line of best fit, and the actual given values of y.
Our aim is the have smaller residuals, as this means we have a line that best fits our data points.
So How Do I Use Residuals?
Watch this video to gain an introduction to residuals and using them in least-squares regressions.
