Nuclear Fusion in Stars

In this lesson on Nuclear Fusion in Stars, which is part of Unit 3 Area of Study 3 for VCE Physics, you’ll learn how to:

  • describe how matter is converted to energy by nuclear fusion in the Sun, which leads to its mass decreasing and the emission of electromagnetic radiation.

Energy release in radioactive decay

We know from Einstein’s energy-mass relationship that energy is proportional to mass. So by finding the difference in mass/energy, we can find the energy release from radioactive decay.
