Determining the Best Transformation is a part of the VCE Further Maths topic Data Analysis. It is part of the subtopic Investigating and Modelling Linear Associations. In this post, we look at which transformation will result in the most accurate and readable data. We may consider a log transformation if the data has poor residuals. If our data is not normally distributed, we may consider a square root transformation.

The Log Transformation
This video explains the log transformation. It also explains situations where it might be best used.
The Reciprocal Transformation
This next video looks at the reciprocal transformation, and its application to transformations. This transformation can only be used on data that doesn’t have zeroes.
