What makes Naomi a Trailblazer?

Naomi is passionate about all things social justice! She is co-founder of the initiative Fill Your Cup, a project which aims to facilitate discussions about injustices in society, providing a safe environment for young people to discuss these issues, better educate themselves and enact change. It has been a highly successful initiative within her school and has been received very positively by the student body. Naomi’s role as co-founder of this project was to manage publicity, organise logistics and lead group discussions.

Naomi acted as co-founder and facilitator of this initiative, all while performing her duties as school captain, catechist member and managing part-time employment. Pretty impressive, right?

The process of creating and executing Fill Your Cup has seen Naomi develop an array of highly useful skills. Communication and confidence are two which she considers to be particularly important.

Collaborative working relies on effective communication. Having to facilitate the group’s discussions about various social causes meant that Naomi was quick to refine this skill, helping her learn how to convey her ideas succinctly and powerfully to various audiences. Furthermore, learning to have greater confidence in herself has enabled Naomi to be a better leader — one who is able to make decisions and incite action.

Naomi’s high school years were pretty challenging. Her father was undergoing constant dialysis treatment and to help out financially, she got herself a part time job as soon as she could. All of this placed significant pressure on Naomi during her senior years, making it very difficult to focus on her studies and perform well academically. Managing such a full plate was hard, but as her social justice initiative demonstrates, she always found time to give back to her communities.

Naomi aims to complete a law degree. Following this, she will either move into the political sector or remain in the judicial field. Regardless of which career path she chooses to pursue, she hopes to continue her work with social justice.

Naomi’s efforts during Year 12 and passion for helping others needs to be commended. For this reason she has been selected as one of our Top 50 Trailblazers!
