What makes Joseph a Trailblazer?

From Gurya, a town in regional NSW, Joseph was highly active in both his school and local community. With a passion for helping others and giving back to the community that raised him, Joseph was involved in his school’s SRC, worked at local cafes, and partook in public speaking competitions. Joseph’s community recognised his commitments as he received Young Citizen of the Year for his local Australia Day awards.

Joseph also received the TAFE NSW Technology and Business Services Student of the Year 2021. He was given the opportunity to participate in the TAFE NSW Virtual Open Day, which was a stepping stone for Joseph’s confidence. This led to his involvement in the National Youth Science Forum and the Lion’s Youth of the Year Program.

These opportunities have broadened Joseph’s horizons, and led him to approaching new challenges and finding different ways to serve his community throughout Year 12. As part of his school’s SRC, Joseph was able to take on more responsibilities within his school, such as new water facilities and improving uniforms. This newfound leadership brought Joseph to take on new roles at his work from an administrative perspective, developing promotional materials.

Taking on a heavy load of work and community service on top of Year 12 study, was no easy feat for Joseph. Coming from a low socioeconomic background with the expense of tertiary education in the near future, Joseph had to take on casual jobs to help out his family. Raised with the will to continuously give back to his community, working did not stop Joseph from volunteering. This includes the Armidale Regional Youth Advisory Committee and Project Green, where schools collected reusable feminine hygiene products to donate to local charities.

“Success used to mean the highest remuneration package, although I now envision success being gained through positive contributions and acts.”

Whilst also studying Business Services in high school, Joseph sees himself venturing down the business pathway and potentially working in public service.

Selflessly giving back to his community, and being involved in areas from business to charity, Joseph is one of our Top 50 Trailblazers for 2021!
