What makes Jannat a Trailblazer?

Jannat has been an incredible contributor to the cultural and religious areas of her school and local community. In 2020 she was nominated as House Captain, where she organised her school’s first ever Harmony Week. This initiative saw her College participate in a range of activities helping them to further their cultural awareness. These included the College’s first interfaith service, a culturally diverse canteen day and an orange accessory day which raised over $700 for Caritas Australia. The week was very successful, opening opportunities for discourse and enlightenment for the school community.

All of these efforts contributed to Jannat’s achievement of winning the 2021 Helen Handbury Award, which recognised her demonstration of strong community leadership. As a result, she was featured in an article by The Catholic Voice newspaper about her journey to winning the award.

On top of this, Jannat participated in a Dine and Donate initiative where students and staff cook for the less fortunate in their community. She also was a Hennessy Day of Action Pastoral Care (PC) ambassador in 2020 where she educated her pastoral class about the importance of stepping up and seeking help when it comes to bullying.

Through these experiences, Jannat has learnt a lot about the importance of being an instigator of social change and speaking up for people who are unable to do so themselves. Jannat says it has definitely broken down any barriers of ignorance she previously held.

Along with the work she did at her school, Jannat also spent considerable time contributing to Hilltops Youth Action Group. By doing all of this work, Jannat has spent a lot of time strengthening her skills being compassionate and empathetic. She learnt to not make judgements against people and to accept that everyone has different experiences and backgrounds. Furthermore, she discovered the importance of not shying away from chances to educate others on current issues facing young Australians today, such as mental health issues.

Jannat found her senior years of high school very challenging. Having moved from Sydney to regional NSW was a big transition. Furthermore, as a Muslim girl moving to a Catholic college, she was hesitant about this change. Her ability to overcome these challenges can be attributed to her strong family support.

Jannat hopes to continue her passion for Biology and become a nutritionist or dietitian. This has been influenced by her own struggle with PCOS and the incredible help she received from an online dietician. From this experience she decided that she wanted to help other people struggling with similar issues. She is motivated to do all of this by knowledge that she will be the first female to finish university in her family.

Jannat is one of our Top 50 Trailblazers!
