What makes Dylan a Trailblazer?

Dylan has been selected as a Finalist for the National 2020 Community Radio Awards for Outstanding Youth Contribution at his local radio station, SWR 99.9, which has thousands of listeners in Western Sydney. While volunteering at least 5-10 hours per week, Dylan has supported the development of the station’s new website, supported members of the station with technological developments, and has even been elected as Manager of the Digital & Marketing Department!

As Manager of the Digital & Marketing Department, Dylan has built crucial group work and leadership skills. He has been responsible for a team of six people, leading them through the website launch, and getting comfortable with emerging technologies and platforms. He scheduled meetings every three months to ensure the team was making progress on tasks. He has found his stride as a leader building crucial organisation skills, and interpersonal conflict resolution experience!

As one can imagine, so much time at a radio station will inevitably build communication skills. Dylan witnessed just how much projects can fall apart if good communication is not established. Dylan encouraged his team to share updates on individual tasks to ensure efficient project management!

While at school, Dylan has also been heavily involved in the management side of Glenwood Media (Film and Radio), creating projects for the school and entertaining students and staff with music on the grounds during Friday’s breaks. He also gained great experience leading the Glenwood High School Media in ‘Glenwood Radio’. Clearly fuelling his passion for radio and media!

While committing to online schooling and being in an LGA of concern, Dylan found it difficult to stay motivated for his studies! But his weekly volunteering and structured project management meant he was able to motivate himself for his HSC, showing great resilience.

After finding his passions in Media, we expect to see Dylan following a career in Media and Communications, and Information Technology! Very fitting for his experience!

“My success has established me as a leader in my organisation and allowed me to continue serving the volunteers of the association and the broader community.”

After reading about Dylan’s success in radio while completing the HSC, it is no surprise to see him as one of our Top 50 Trailblazers!
