What makes Damien a Trailblazer?

Damien Sinha has been integral in developing his school’s STEM program, and is a high achiever STEM student himself, achieving much success in the Australian Space Design Competition. Damien first participated in the competition in 2019 with a handful of other students and progressed to Finals.

His talents and contribution as a team member resulted in him being elected to leadership roles in the two succeeding competitions. Damien served as Company CEO of over 40 students from his school in 2021 and led the team to Finals again, where he was elected as the Nationals CEO.

Damien has proven himself to be an incredible leader, guiding his peers of varying ages to work together to achieve a common goal. As a result of his efforts in the Australian Space Design Competition, Damien was recognised at school and given the opportunity to attend the Australian Defence Force World Engineering Conference held at the Royal Australian Air Force Base in NSW.

Furthermore, Damien committed himself to bettering the STEM program at his school for other students, continuing the school’s success at the competition, and engaging a wider array of students to join the STEM community. His efforts earned him the STEM award and Overall Leadership award.

Damien has been able to broaden his school’s STEM community and bring a larger group of students together to compete in the Australian Space Design Community. Despite the challenges of COVID lockdowns, Damien continued pursuing his goal and hosted events and meetings over Zoom.

As leader, Damien focussed on creating an inclusive space for people to openly share their ideas and collaborate. Through this experience, he has learnt how to be a teacher and how to guide others towards a common goal. He became a leader that his peers trusted and respected, which undoubtedly contributed to the team’s success.

Determined to balance his time between his studies, family and social life, Damien developed strong time management skills. He ensured that his Year 12 was not only spent studying, but that he also had time for the other important things in his life. Overall, this ensured that he did not jeopardise his wellbeing and was able to pursue things that mattered to him.

“The most meaningful and deep skill I developed was being able to be a teacher and teach others many amazing new skills.”

With a clearly strong background in STEM, Damien aspires to study quantum engineering at university and go on to work for a tele-communications company. Both his academic rigour and leadership initiative place him in great stead for this career and are the reasons why Damien is on our list of Top 50 Trailblazers!
