Science was first taught at the University of Sydney in 1852, with the Science Faculty being officially established in 1882.

The degree also has a Mathematics prerequisite, meaning that students admitted into the course need to have achieved a Band 4 in Mathematics Advanced, or a Band E3 in Mathematics Extension 1 or 2.
