Surviving Pre-HSC Breakups

Surviving Breakups

Breakups suck — there’s absolutely no doubt about that.

Now throw the HSC into the mix and you have a recipe for emotional upheaval, bad texting decisions and tear-stained study notes.

While there aren’t any quick fixes or instant broken-heart remedies, here are a few tricks to help you make a breakup as manageable as possible. Let’s get started!

Step #1: Have a Good Cry
Step #2: Delete Them on Social Media
Step #3: Spend Time With Friends
Step #4: Dive Into Study

Step #1: Have A Good Cry

Seriously. I don’t care if you’re a guy or a girl, tough or sensitive; having a good, long cry is one of the best ways to start to feel a little less horrible.

Cry in the shower, in bed, cuddled up with an old teddy or while listening to Adele on repeat — just let it all out. This step can be repeated as many times as you want, you’ll always feel lighter after a good cry.

Step #2: Delete Them On Social Media

It’s so, so, so tempting to lurk and check on your ex immediately after a break up.

And a few days after.

And a few weeks after.

As much as you want to see that tweet about what he just ate or the Snapchat of her cat making a funny face, deleting your ex from all social media straight away is always for the best. Plus, this way you can’t send them any poorly thought out messages at 2 in the morning.

Step #3: Spend Time With Friends

After a break up its easy to just want to lock yourself in your room for a few days and only resurface for ice cream or to reset the wifi — don’t.

Organise to get together with a bunch of friends to keep your mind off the sad stuff and remind you that you’ve got a great bunch of people ready to support you.

Pro tip: setting up a study group with friends not only distracts you from the breakup, it also helps you prepare for the HSC and remember your priorities!

Step #4: Dive Into Study

I know it sounds crazy and unappealing, but keeping up a good study schedule can actually really help you get over a breakup.

By focusing on study you’re able to distract yourself, plus you’ll get a natural buzz from knowing that you’re working effectively towards your HSC!

It’s Not The End Of The World

It’s really easy after a breakup to think that you’ll never be happy again, but trust me you will. You’re going to go on to have many more relationships throughout your life, so make sure not to get too caught up in what you’ve lost!

Always remember that there’s a whole new world of experiences that will open up to you after the HSC and work towards it.
