Preventing Procrastination

Trying to prevent procrastination but struggling to maintain productivity?

While there are so many more interesting things to do instead of the task at hand, we all know that developing self-discipline is the solution to this problem.

Let’s have a look at how we can develop self-discipline so that we can get back to doing stuff which is more interesting than studying!

Tip #1: The Pomodoro Time Technique
Tip #2: Timetable Your HSC Life
Tip #3: Block Your Procrastination Websites

Tip #1: The Pomodoro Time Technique

Sitting down and studying for ten hours on end works for very few people.

In fact, the best way to really get things done and prevent procrastination is to have regular breaks! This is why the Pomodoro Technique works.

  1. Write down your immediate tasks for the evening.
  2. Estimate how long each will take and split them into 25 minute intervals.
  3. Designate 5 minutes break between them.
  4. Set your phone to time 25 minutes. Get started!

When you break up your afternoon and evening, it should then look something like this:

Time

Study Activity

4:00pm

Finish Maths Ex 9, Q2-8 (20 min)
Mark maths homework (5 min)

4:25pm Break
4:30pm

Attempt 2012 Maths past exam Q1-5 (25 min)

4:55pm Break
5:00pm

Go through past exam Trotsky questions (10 min)
Write Trotsky practice questions (15 min)

5:25pm Break
5:30pm

Write key points for Trotsky practice essay using notes (25 min)

Tip #2: Timetable Your HSC Life

As above, invest some time in timetabling your life up until your Trials, and after you get your marks back, until your HSC Exams. Figure out which you’ll need to study more if you’re not doing so well and factor in more time of that.

Check out our article on what you should do as soon as you get your HSC timetable!

Tip #3: Block Your Procrastination Websites

Everyone procrastinates, especially on the internet. The best way to prevent procrastination is to force yourself into working by removing the stimulus.

Time-block distracting websites with SelfControl (Mac) or Cold Turkey (PC). These work really well with Pomodoro as they will block the websites for an amount of time you set for yourself.

The sites I usually have to block are Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, and Reddit. And I know that I can access them on my phone, so what do I do? Put my phone on airplane mode.

I always suggest blocking it for your whole evening study so that you’re not tempted to procrastinate more than your allotted 5 minute break!

There are three simple ways to get stuff done! Good luck!

Elizabeth Goh isn’t a fan of writing about herself in third person, even if she loves writing. Elizabeth decided she didn’t get enough English, History or Legal Studies at Abbotsleigh School for her own HSC in 2010 so she came back to help others survive it with Art of Smart Education. She’s since done a mish-mash of things with her life which includes studying a Bachelor of Arts (Politics and International Relations) with a Bachelor of Laws at Macquarie University, working for NSW Parliament, and admitting that she actually has four Taylor Swift songs on her main playlist.
