How Long Should Your Study Break Be for the HSC?

So you’ve got the whole day to study at by yourself at home. The question is, how long should your study break be?

The problem with studying independently is you don’t have a teacher to keep you in line or put the pressure on. So how do you keep yourself from straying off the task at hand?

In this video, I’m going to explain exactly how long your study breaks should be and how you can use these study breaks to maximise your productivity.

The Philosophy Behind a Study Break

If you find that your study breaks are too long, you need to think about shifting your perspective of study breaks in general. One way to do this is to think of it like taking a break during a sporting match.

For example, if you’re playing a basketball game and all of a sudden you get tired, you’re not going to just walk off the court because you feel like it right? Getting tired is a part of the sport.

The thing is, that’s exactly what you’re doing every time you take a break from studying just because you feel like it.

You’ve got to think: “what’s the purpose of a break, what’s the goal?”

When you’re playing basketball, you don’t take a break to relax, it actually serves a purpose. Whether your studying or playing sport, the point of a break should always be to refresh and reenergise so you can go harder when you get back to it!

If you have too long a break, you’re going to start feeling lazy. Just like how you need to keep your blood pumping when on the court, you need to do the same when studying.

So, if this is the case, how long should your study breaks be?

So we need to think about how to structure your break, and it’s quite simple. We can actually look at sport and how they structure their breaks for guidance!

The first principle is that typically a half-time break or quarter-time break for sport is pretty short. They’re usually about five, ten minutes max.

This is because if you take any longer than 10 minutes, your body cools down. Similarly, any longer than 10 minutes mentally and you start cooling down and turning off.

So, this means you want to aim for a 5, 10-minute break, nothing more than that. It should be just enough so that you can refresh and re-energize, and not too long that you switch off entirely and don’t come back.

The second suggestion is to make sure that you stick to a structured study break regime.

Trust me, DON’T just take a break whenever you feel like it or if you’re tired.

Rather, if you have a time that you’ve defined in advance, you’ll have a goal to work towards and will push yourself that little bit further.

All you have to do is follow these two easy steps, and you’ll be able to work at home based on your own initiative in no time.
