Why the April School Holidays Can Make Or Break Your ATAR… and Why Most Students Won’t Realise it Until it’s Too Late

Girl studying - April School Holidays Study

Rowan Kunz - Author Bio

Most students completely relax during the April school holidays.

“It’s my last chance to chill until the HSC is over!”

And they’re absolutely right…
But also completely wrong.

See, there’s something critical about the April holidays that nearly every student misses — and it has a direct impact on how well (or badly) they do in their HSC Trials.

👉 After interviewing thousands of 98+ ATAR scorers — including State Rankers and 99.95 achievers — I discovered a pattern.

Students who crushed their Trials did one thing differently during the April holidays.

What was it?

Here’s what you’re going to learn:

✅ Why the April School Holidays are the most strategic study window of your final year — and the mistake that turns them into a disaster

✅ A subject-by-subject “hit list” to help you catch up and get ahead (even if you’re way behind)

✅ The perfect holiday routine that lets you both study smart AND relax

✅ And the free HSC tools top scorers are using right now to prep for Term 2

Let’s dive in.

Why do the April School Holidays MAKE or BREAK your ATAR?
Subject-Specific Hit List of What To Do These April School Holidays
Your Perfect April School Holiday Study Routine

So, why do the April School Holidays MAKE or BREAK your ATAR?

So… why exactly can the April Holidays make or break your ATAR?

Let’s break this down.

Your HSC Trials — the real marker of how ready you are — are in less than 120 days in Term 3.

They hit right after the July school holidays, which means you’ll be walking into school straight into your biggest assessments of the year.

And that’s when things get messy.

Here’s what most students try to do during the July holidays:

  • Revise and memorise the entire year’s worth of HSC content
  • Fix weak areas they should’ve worked on months ago
  • Smash through HSC Trial exam practice questions & papers
  • Write multiple practice essays per subject

😰 Stressed just reading that? So are most students who wait.

The truth is, they never finish everything. And their Trial marks suffer.

But here’s what top scorers knew that most don’t:

The real preparation for Trials doesn’t happen in July — it starts now.

Use April right, and July becomes manageable. Use April wrong, and July becomes a total crash-and-burn moment.

Which brings us to the real question:

💭 What exactly should you be doing these April holidays?

Let’s dive in.

The Precise Subject-Specific Hit List of What To Do These April School Holidays

Before we dive into what to do for each subject, here are two crucial principles that most students miss entirely:

📌 Principle #1:

👉 Use the April holidays to catch up on anything you didn’t quite nail from Term 4 or Term 1.

Because here’s the truth: if you leave this until July, you’ll be trying to learn AND revise at the same time — under major pressure.

📌 Principle #2:

👉 Fix weak areas and knowledge gaps now, while you still have time to go deep.

Waiting until July? You won’t have the mental space or time to fix the hard stuff — and you’ll leave marks on the table in Trials.

What should you do for English?

Let’s start with the Common Module — because this is where so many students unknowingly shoot themselves in the foot.

⚠️ The Common Mistake:

If you had an assessment in Term 4 that included a related text, you might think you’ve got a usable essay for Trials.

But guess what?

❌ You’ll never need that related text again.

It’s not assessed in Trials or the HSC.

Which means that essay?

It’s only 50% usable. You’re missing a full response on your prescribed text — the one that does count.

✅ Here’s What You Should Do for the Common Module in April

(Hint: Doing this now will save you hours of panic in July.)

  • 🔍 Build + Polish Your Quote Tables for your prescribed text
  • 📝 Write a Full Base Essay on your prescribed text — with no related text
  • 📤 Submit your Base Essay for Feedback: You can use Artie our AI English tutor for 100+ detailed HSC Band 6 level criteria feedback)
  • Refine your essay until it’s hitting 20/20 standard

Once you’ve done this, you’ll have a rock-solid foundation ready for Trials.

You won’t have to touch this module again until July — and even then, it’ll just be a refresh.

💡 Pro tip: Use our HSC English Trials Checklist to track exactly where you’re at and what’s left to do.

English Checklist

🔄 Now What If You’ve Covered Module A or B in Term 1?

Don’t wait until July to start prepping those essays either.

If you’ve finished Module A or B in Term 1 (depending on your school’s order), here’s your checklist:

  • 🔍 Build and Polish Quote Tables for your prescribed text
  • 📝 Write a Full Base Essay if you haven’t already done one for your Term 1 assessment
  • 📤 Submit for Feedback via Artie
  • Polish until it hits a 20/20 standard

What should you do for Maths (Standard – 4U) these April Holidays?

Let’s start with a feeling every Maths student knows:

You walk out of an assessment and think:

“Those were the hardest questions I’ve ever seen… where did my teacher even find them?”

If that sounds familiar, you’re not alone — and it’s not random.

Here’s what top scorers know that most students don’t:

Your teacher is picking questions designed to mimic the hardest HSC Trial papers — the ones that really separate average and top performers.

And the students who crush Maths in the HSC?

They’re not just revising more…

👉 They’re making practice harder than the real exam.

🚨 The Mistake Most Students Make

Most students spend the April holidays doing one of two things wrong:

  1. Wasting time on topics they already know
  2. Practising only easy, textbook-style questions

✅ The High-Performer Fix: Traffic Light Your Topics

At Art of Smart, our students don’t guess what to revise. They use our Traffic Light System to laser-focus on their weak spots and simulate real exam pressure.

Here’s how it works:

For every topic you’ve studied in Term 4 and Term 1, give it one of these ratings:

🔴 Red – “I’d lose lots of marks”
🟡 Yellow – “I’d lose some marks”
🟢 Green – “I’d gain most marks”

👉 Your goal for these April holidays?

Forget the greens. Attack your reds and yellows.

🧠 Why This Works

  • You stop wasting time on topics you’ve already mastered
  • You focus where the marks are lost most easily
  • You simulate Trial-level difficulty by using past exam questions — not just textbook ones

That way, by the time you hit the July holidays, you’ve already:

✅ Fixed most of your weak spots
✅ Built up real exam stamina
✅ Covered Term 4 + Term 1 content — leaving you only Term 2 topics to revise

🎁 Want to Make This Effortless?

We’ve built a set of HSC Maths Dashboards (for Standard to 4U) to help you:

  • Quickly rate your topics
  • Instantly find HSC Trial-level practice questions
  • Track your confidence week-by-week

🎯 Want to access the dashboard for your level of Maths?

What about Chemistry, Physics and Biology?

These subjects have a reputation for being content-heavy and hard — and for good reason.

If you’re behind now, Term 2 will feel like a pressure cooker.

And if you try to fix everything in July?
You’ll be in survival mode, not performance mode.

Here’s how top students avoid the panic and set themselves up to crush their HSC Trials.

1️⃣ Catch Up on Study Notes from Term 4 & 1

If your notes aren’t done yet — you’re already behind.

Most students try to write their notes in July… but that’s way too late.

If your notes aren’t finished, you won’t have time to actually use them.

That means fewer past papers, rushed revision — and lower Trial marks.

What to do:

  • Pull out your syllabus.
  • Highlight every Term 4 & Term 1 dot point you haven’t covered — and knock them out now.

This alone will put you ahead of 80% of students in your year.

2️⃣ Get Ahead on Study Notes for Term 2

Here’s a secret from 99+ ATAR scorers:

Even the best students fall behind on notes during Term 2.

Why? Because it’s the busiest term of the year.

So how do they stay ahead?

They use the April holidays to get at least 2 weeks ahead.

That way, when Term 2 throws curveballs (assignments, sports, stress…), they’ve already built a buffer — and they’re not scrambling in July.

3️⃣ Identify Weak Areas Using the Traffic Light System

This is the step that separates average students from high performers.

Most people study what they’re already good at — because it feels productive.

But it’s actually the slowest way to improve.

Instead: Use the Traffic Light System.

Rate every Term 4 & 1 syllabus dot point:

🔴 Red = I’d lose lots of marks
🟡 Yellow = I’d lose some marks
🟢 Green = I’d gain most marks

Then, laser-focus your revision on just your reds and yellows.

🎯 Bonus: We’ve built powerful HSC Dashboards to make this ridiculously easy — they include syllabus dot points, rating tools + curated Trial/HSC questions.

4️⃣ Practice Short Answer Questions (SAQ) for Your Red & Yellow Areas

This one is huge.

Across Chem, Phys and Bio, 65%+ of your final HSC marks come from:

✅ Multiple choice
✅ Short answer questions (SAQs)

However, most internal assessments are not in this format — so students don’t get enough practice.

And they get caught off guard in Trials and the final HSC exam.

If you’re not doing SAQs now, you’ll be learning under pressure in July — and you’ll lose easy marks.

What to do:

  • Pick 2 SAQs per red/yellow syllabus dot point
  • Focus on building your technique (wording, structure, keywords)
  • Submit them for feedback — or self-mark using the official HSC criteria

5️⃣ Build Model Responses for 7–8 Marker Questions

Here’s where students bleed marks — and it’s the hardest to fix last-minute.

7–8 mark SAQs often combine multiple syllabus points and require high-level verbs like: “Discuss”, “Assess”, and “Evaluate”.

You need to:

  • Use precise syllabus language
  • Structure responses clearly
  • Integrate content across modules

🧠 Best time to practise these? Right now.

April is when you still have time to build your first draft, get feedback, and polish it.

July? You’ll be rushing, and likely too stressed to refine.

What to do:

  • Pick 1–2 major concepts from Term 4 & 1
  • Write your own model 7–8 mark responses
  • Submit for feedback and iterate

What about Economics?

Economics feels manageable… until Term 2 hits and you suddenly realise:

❗️You’re behind on notes
❗️You don’t have recent stats memorised
❗️You haven’t written a single essay since Term 1

And then it’s July — your Trials are two weeks away — and you’re in free fall.

So let’s stop that now.

Here are the 6 mission-critical things you need to do these April Holidays to stay in control and set yourself up for a top Band 6 result.

  1. Catch up on any study notes you are behind on from Term 4 & 1 content.
  2. Get ahead on study notes for Term 2 content
  3. Update your HSC Economics Statistics notes
  4. Revise the weak areas and gaps from Term 4 & 1 content.
  5. Work on practice Short Answer Questions (SAQ) covering weak areas
  6. Write 2 x Practice HSC Economics Essays

🧠 1. Catch Up on Study Notes (Term 4 & 1)

Economics is content-heavy — and you can’t revise or write essays if your notes aren’t done.

Yet most students try to finish their notes in July

Which means they run out of time for the things that matter most:

➤ Writing essays
➤ Practising exam questions
➤ Memorising key stats

What to do:

Pull out your syllabus and identify every dot point from Term 4 and Term 1 you haven’t summarised yet — and get them DONE this April.

🔮 2. Get Ahead on Study Notes for Term 2

Let’s be honest: everyone falls behind on study notes in Term 2.

Why?

Because it’s packed with assignments, stress, assessments, and fatigue.

So what do top students do?

They get 2 weeks ahead during April.

That way, when the chaos hits in Term 2, they don’t fall behind.

🧩 Your April move: Start outlining or drafting notes for the first 2 weeks of Term 2 content.

📊 3. Update Your HSC Economics Statistics Notes

If you want a Band 6, you must use updated data and real-world examples in:

  • Your short answers (3–6 markers)
    Your essays (20 markers)

But most students leave this until just before Trials — and end up overwhelmed by the volume of stats they need to learn.

Use April to:

  • Update your stat notes from Term 4 & 1 content
  • Organise them by syllabus topic (makes them easier to memorise)
  • Start practising how to weave stats into your responses

🚨 4. Revise Weak Areas Using the Traffic Light System

The worst feeling?

Realising in July you still don’t fully understand Exchange Rates or BOP… with 10 days to go.

Instead of leaving your weak areas until the last minute:

✅ Use the Traffic Light System now:

  • 🔴 Red = “I’d lose lots of marks”
  • 🟡 Yellow = “I’d lose some marks”
  • 🟢 Green = “I’d gain most marks”

Then target all your red/yellow areas from Term 4 and 1.

🎯 Need help organising this?

We’ve built a powerful HSC Economics Dashboard that includes syllabus breakdowns, past Trial/HSC questions + progress tracking.

✍️ 5. Practice Short Answer Questions (SAQ) for Your Weak Areas

40% of your HSC Economics exam is made up of Short Answer Questions.

And yet… most students neglect these because:

  • Their internal assessments don’t include many
  • They don’t know what “Full mark structure” really looks like

✅ April To-Do:

  • Complete at least 2 SAQs for every red/yellow dot point
  • Focus on using precise terminology + structured logic
  • Submit for feedback if possible — or self-mark with official Band 6 guides

🧾 6. Write 2 x Practice Economics Essays

This one is a game-changer.

40% of your HSC marks also come from essays — and most students don’t write enough.

Why?

You probably only write 1 essay across all of Year 12 internally — and Eco essays require a unique structure.

The result?

Students panic-write essays in July, without knowing what a Band 6 really looks like.

✅ April To-Do:

  • Choose 2 of the 10 core topics (see list below)
  • Find past Trial or HSC essay questions for those topics
  • Write full responses under timed or semi-timed conditions
  • Submit for feedback, revise, and bank your Band 6 draft

Your goal isn’t to memorise word-for-word — it’s to know how to write flexibly under pressure with structure, examples, and stats.

🧠 What Topics Should You Write Essays On?

Here’s your Top 10 Essay Hit List for HSC Economics:

  1. Globalisation
  2. Free Trade and Protection
  3. Case Study (China or alternate)
  4. The Balance of Payments
  5. Exchange Rates
  6. Environment
  7. Fiscal Policy + 1–3 Economic Issues
  8. Monetary Policy + 1–3 Economic Issues
  9. Microeconomic Reform
  10. Labour Market Policy

What about Business Studies?

Business Studies seems easy… until you get to Trials and realise:

“Wait — I don’t know the syllabus well enough to write structured responses… and I’ve barely used a case study this year.”

The truth?

This subject can be deceptively tricky. The questions look simple, but the structure, syllabus terminology, and case study application is what separates Band 5 from Band 6.

So here’s what top scorers do in April to make sure they don’t panic in July.

1️⃣ Catch Up on Study Notes (Term 4 & 1)

Business Studies = Content. Heavy.

If your notes aren’t done, you won’t have time for essays or past papers later — and you’ll walk into Trials underprepared.

So don’t wait for July to scramble.

✅ What to do:

  • Go through the syllabus and highlight any dot points from Term 4 & 1 you haven’t summarised
  • Get clear, structured notes done now while there’s time

2️⃣ Get Ahead on Term 2 Study Notes

Term 2 is one of the busiest times of the year — and most students fall behind.

Smart students know this.

So they build a 2-week buffer during April.

✅ What to do:

  • Look at your school’s schedule or textbook
  • Start building Term 2 notes early — especially for Finance or HR (topics where case study integration is tricky)

3️⃣ Fix Weak Areas Using the Traffic Light System

You know those topics that sound familiar… but you secretly don’t understand?

Those are the marks you’ll lose under pressure in your Trials.

✅ Fix it now using the Traffic Light System:

🔴 Red = “I’d lose lots of marks”
🟡 Yellow = “I’d lose some marks”
🟢 Green = “I’d gain most marks”

Then revise and test yourself on the reds and yellows.

🎯 Bonus: To make this easy, we’ve built a HSC Business Studies Dashboard that helps you:

  • Track your syllabus coverage
  • Find targeted Trial-style SAQ and extended response questions
  • Build your confidence week by week

Business Studies Dashboard

HSC Study Dashboards:

Business Studies Study Dashboard 💼

NOTE: To get access to your own version of the Dashboards, make sure you log in to Google Drive and hit File Make a Copy!

4️⃣ Practise Short Answer Questions (SAQs) for Red + Yellow Topics

These are the easiest marks to lose — and often the last format students practise.

In Trials and the HSC, 40% of your marks come from SAQs — and the margin between a 4/6 and 6/6 is tiny.

✅ What to do:

  • Do 2 SAQs per red/yellow syllabus point
  • Focus on:
    • Bullet-point structure
    • Syllabus terminology
    • Integration of real case studies

5️⃣ Write 1-2 Practice Reports or Essays

Unlike other subjects, Business has a mix of essay/report styles depending on the question.

If you’ve only done 1 internal assessment essay, you won’t be exam-ready unless you practise this April.

✅ What to do:

  • Pick 1–2 Trial/HSC essay questions (use our dashboard or past papers)
  • Write full responses under light-timed conditions
  • Submit for feedback or compare to Band 6 samples
  • Improve and bank it for your Trial prep in July

6️⃣ Prepare & Integrate Your Case Study Examples

This is the number one Band 6 unlock most students skip.

Generic examples won’t cut it in Trials — your responses need specific, recent case studies that align with each topic.

✅ What to do:

  • Choose a core case study (e.g. Qantas, Apple, McDonald’s, Canva)
  • Create a Case Study Bank for each topic:
    • Operations
    • Marketing
    • Finance
      HR
  • Write 1-2 model paragraphs that apply this case study for each topic
