What are Acids and Bases?

This post will be an introduction to the properties of acids and bases for QCE Chemistry, introducing the concept of an acid and a base.

3.1.2 – Properties of Acids and Bases

  • Understand that acids are substances that can act as proton (hydrogen ion)
    donors and can be classified as monoprotic or polyprotic depending on the
    number of protons donated by each molecule of the acid

 

What is An Acid?

Acids and bases can be described via The Bronsted Lowry Theory which models acids as substances that donate protons (aka hydrogen ions), and bases as substances that accept protons. This shall be explored in greater depth in later posts.

Acids (proton donors) can donate single protons (monoprotic acids) such as HCL, or multiple protons (polyprotic acids) such as H2SO4 (diprotic), H3PO4 (triprotic).

This video will introduce you to the Bronsted Lowry Theory which will be the main mode of describing acids.
