#1: The wide range of majors to choose from

Information Technology (IT) has so many different majors for students to choose from. “At UTS, the Bachelor of Science in IT has lots of options that can be chosen within it. There are 5 different majors — I’m doing Networking and Interaction Design as my sub-major!” Jackson tells us. 

The five different majors that can be undertaken are:

• • Business Information Systems Management
  • Data Analytics
  • Enterprise Systems Development
  • Interaction Design
  • Networking and Cybersecurity 

#2: The inclusive environment 

UTS is a university full of diverse individuals from all backgrounds! The Bachelor of Science in information Technology is no exception to this notion.

“The best thing about UTS is its diversity. The people there, regardless of your nationality or race, are really great. The students and teachers are really kind to everyone and they really aim to promote diversity! No matter what your background is, you won’t feel out of place at UTS,” Jackson says.

#3: The prospects this degree gives students 

IT is a field that is characterised by constant evolution and innovation! “The demand for people with Information Technology knowledge has only become greater and greater over time,” Jackson tells us.

“In my major, if you take Cybersecurity, you would have pretty good career options, ranging from government work, networking and consultancy. You also can work with social media companies, as they require security as well!” Jackson says. 

This degree will provide you with a solid foundation, as well as the knowledge and tools to stay relevant in this ever-changing industry!

Top 3 Cons of an Information Technology Degree

#1: The large workload

If you’re studying Information Technology at UTS, be prepared for the heavy workload — you’ll be receiving many different types of assessment tasks!

“We have quizzes, written tests, and final exams. But we also have research reports and analysis, this is always an interesting topic though! We also have the chance to make something physical. It’s important to keep on top of your workload or you will feel stressed,” Jackson tells us. 

If you’re ever struggling to cope with the workload, remember to reach out for help if you need it!

#2: Group work isn’t everyone’s cup of tea

“We do lots of presentations and learn lots of group skills — we do group projects every semester in every subject!” Jackson says. 

The Bachelor of Science in IT is a highly social degree, which forces students to face their fear of group assessments, by giving them a whole bunch to do throughout their studies. Group tasks will help you to be able to work as a team and allow you to grow and develop not only in an educational sense — maybe the dreaded group work is not so bad after all! 

#3: Long hours

Due to the huge workload, you will spend quite a lot of time on campus — an average of 20 hours per week (and keep in mind that you’ll also need to find time to work on homework and assessments)! But it’s not all bad, you can try and find the best eats on campus, or the coolest study spots.

Any regrets? 

While Jackson hasn’t expressed any regrets of his own, he’s mentioned the importance of really thinking about your major and degree choice. If you don’t consider these things carefully, you might not be content with what you’ve chosen to study.

“Before you enter this degree, you should do your own research into the different majors! There are many different ones that can be chosen in IT. Check out what this degree is all about,” Jackson says. 

What do you wish you had known before starting the degree? 

Information Technology at UTS is as multimodal as they come, with a wide variety of teaching styles, learning methods and even ways to be assessed! It’s important to take it all as it comes and to not have any preconceived ideas — you will feel a lot less stressed if you go with the flow! 

“Pretty much we have lectures, tutorials, labs and workshops. Depending on the way the subject is designed varies on how long the subject will be — the units are all really varied!” Jackson tells us. 

What makes this degree different from the ones offered at other universities? 

There are many factors that make this degree stand out from similar ones offered at other unis! Jackson tells us from his own experience why he enjoys studying IT at UTS.

“UTS has done an amazing job facilitating my learning style and many other different styles. They encourage students to not only understand the theory, but they also push you to utilise your practical knowledge and creativity as well! It may not seem apparent, but creativity is a major aspect of this degree!” Jackson says. 

What inspired you to choose this degree?

If you’re someone who’s passionate about the planet, purpose and the possibilities of this world, this could be an excellent degree for you! Here’s why Jackson wanted to take on this degree:

“I love technology, solving problems, and I love to think about the future! This degree gives me so much enjoyment. Some people may think this degree is super hard, but in saying this, it’s also so interesting,” Jackson says. 

What are the possible career paths?

“There are lots of different career paths for this degree — there are so many different directions someone can follow!” Jackson says. 

Studying a Bachelor of Science in Information Technology means you’ll be opening so many doors of opportunity. These will vary with majors studied, your interests, or advancements in the IT field.
