What is a function and relation?
In this post, we define and use a function and a relation as mappings between sets, and as a rule or a formula that defines one variable quantity in terms of another. We define a relation as any set of ordered pairs (x, y) of real numbers and understand the formal definition of a function as a set of ordered pairs (x, y) of real numbers such that no two ordered pairs have the same first component (or x -component). This is part of the Prelim Maths Advanced course under the topic Working with Functions and sub-part Introduction to Functions, specifically focusing on what is a function and relation.
Introduction to Functions
The following two videos cover the introduction to functions. The first video covers the definition of a function, and the second solidifies your understanding by providing great examples and counter-examples.
Part 1: Defining a function
Part 2: Examples and counter examples
Defining a relation
In the video below, the definition of a relation is covered, by mapping and graphing.
