# Relationship between Angle of Inclination, Tangent and Gradient

### What is the relationship between the angle of inclination, tangent, and gradient?

In this post, we examine and use the relationship between the angle of inclination of a line or tangent, \theta , with the positive x-axis, and the gradient, m , of that line or tangent, and establish that tan(\theta) = m , as a part of the Prelim Maths Advanced course under the topic Calculus and sub-part Gradients of Tangents. The relationship between the angle of inclination, tangent, and the gradient is that the tangent of the angle of inclination gives us a value for the gradient of the function, which is expressed as tan(\theta) = m .
