Relationship between Angle of Inclination, Tangent and Gradient

What is the relationship between the angle of inclination, tangent, and gradient?

In this post, we examine and use the relationship between the angle of inclination of a line or tangent, \theta , with the positive x-axis, and the gradient, m , of that line or tangent, and establish that tan(\theta) = m , as a part of the Prelim Maths Advanced course under the topic Calculus and sub-part Gradients of Tangents. The relationship between the angle of inclination, tangent, and the gradient is that the tangent of the angle of inclination gives us a value for the gradient of the function, which is expressed as tan(\theta) = m .

Understanding the gradient formula

The following three videos will help you understand the relationship between angle of inclination and gradient, by enforcing your understanding on the gradient formula and understanding how tangent is used.

Part 1: Developing the gradient formula

Part 2: Angle of inclination

Part 3: Example of finding an angle
