Oxidation and Reduction

What is Oxidation and Reduction?

This post will introduce the concepts of oxidation and reduction which form redox reactions for Prelim Chemistry.

Topic: Predicting Reactions of Metals

  • Apply the definitions of oxidation and reduction in terms of electron transfer and oxidation numbers to a range of reduction and oxidation (redox) reactions

What is a Redox Reaction?

A redox reaction is essentially a reaction that involves the oxidation (loss of electron/s) and reduction (gain of electron/s) of the compounds in the reaction. This video will introduce redox reactions in greater depth.

Oxidation numbers are a way to keep track of where electrons are in a reaction, if there is a change in oxidation number, it will be a redox reaction, if not, then it is not a redox reaction. This video will introduce you to oxidation numbers which are used to determine the transfer of electrons between reactants in a reaction if it is redox.
