Nuclear Transmutations and Energy

This section is part of the HSC Physic syllabus Module 8: From the universe to the atom, Quantum Mechanical Nature of the Atom.

Let’s analyse relationships that represent the conservation of mass-energy in spontaneous and artificial nuclear transmutations, including alpha decay, beta decay, nuclear fission and nuclear fusion.

Some definitions for this section are as follows:
  • Alpha decay results in the release of a helium atom
  • Beta-decay results in the release of an electron
  • Nuclear Fusion is the process of producing energy by colliding small atoms
  • Nuclear Fission is the process of splitting an atom into two or more smaller nuclei as fission products
