Limiting Reagents

What is a Limiting Reagent?

This post will introduce limiting reagents in reactions for Prelim Chemistry.

Topic: Mole Concept

  • Explore the concept of the mole and relate this to Avogadro’s constant to describe, calculate and manipulate masses, chemical amounts and numbers of particles in:
    • Limiting reagent reactions

Determining the Extent of a Reaction

Say you have a reaction A + B -> C, and you input 2 moles of A but only 1 mole of B, will the reaction produce 2 moles of C or 1 mole? If you said 1, you’re right. B is called the limiting reagent in this case, it is the quantity that determines the extent of a chemical reaction and how much products can be produced. This video will go through limiting reactants in a little more detail.

This video takes you through some example reactions with limiting reagents.
