Language of Rates of Change

In this topic, we explore the different types of rates of change. This language comes from increasing and decreasing functions. It is an expression of how fast or slow the function is changing, as well as the direction (positive/negative). This is part of the Prelim Maths Extension 1 Syllabus from the topic Calculus: Rates of Change. In this post, we will explore Rates of change with respect to time rates of change.

Here we will learn to use appropriate language to describe rates of change, for example:

  • ‘at rest’,
  • ‘initially’,
  • ‘change of direction’ and
  • ‘increasing at an increasing rate’.

Let’s explore these phrases by watching us the following video.
