What should you do in preparation for the exams?

Well, it depends on where you are in your HSC journey — are you weeks away from exams or you’re just having a peek at what to expect when you sit them at the end of the year?

A tutor will always be helpful when preparing for HSC maths exams. Check out our local HSC maths tutors in Blacktown and Sutherland Shire! You can also find the top rated Maths tutors in Sydney.

If you’ve only started the Year 12 syllabus…

Then now’s the time to start building up your study notes. Of course you’ll have the formula sheet (Standard 1 & 2 or Advanced, Extension 1 & 2) during the actual exam, but there are going to be so many different types of questions you’ll need to answer and the formula sheet is only a guide to help you out.

As you cover each topic, you should have notes that detail how to answer particular questions and have various examples. Ideally, you’ll want to have topic summaries that make sense to you so that when you attempt a past paper, you can go over any errors and look back on your notes and understand areas you need to improve on.

Head here for some other tips on working towards a Band 6 in HSC Maths! We’ve also got some tips here for familiarising yourself with your scientific calculator — which you’ll no doubt be using in the exam.

If you’re a few weeks away from sitting your exam…

You’re already doing well! Look at you checking out past papers to prepare for the big day.

It’s crunch time, so now you need to check that you’ve got a great understanding of all the topics that you’ll be assessed on. Identify any of your weaknesses and work on filling in those knowledge gaps!

Get that additional exposure to questions you’re not too familiar with by going over textbook questions. Then once you feel like you’ve got a bit more confidence, work on a past paper.

Don’t forget to actually mark it and go over the solutions, so you know which areas you need to work on.

Now that you know how to prepare for your exams, it’s time to get started on those HSC Maths past papers!

Matt Saunders is a huge nerd who first got into writing through fan-fiction. He’d known science was the path for him since a young age, and after discovering a particular love of bad chemistry jokes (and chemistry too), he’s gone onto to study Forensic Chemistry at UTS. His HSC in 2014 was defined in equal parts by schoolwork and stagecraft, which left him, weirdly enough, with a love of Maths strong enough to inspire him to tutor any level, along with 7-10 Science and HSC Chemistry.
