You, Your Family and the HSC

Despite what they all say about the HSC being a one man game- You V BOSTES. That most definitely is not true, your family is apart of it as well.

To be truthful I am not the most family orientated person and never really have been. However it’s good to know that you always have people behind, supporting you.

Teenagers are known for ‘drifting away’ from their families especially during the HSC year, and that is okay. As a teenager, parents need to expect it to some extent. We’re growing up, many of us becoming adults throughout the year and with that becoming more independent.

In the last week of term two, one of the girls in my grade had her brother pass away. It was a tragedy for her and her family, however the whole grade felt the grief too. Being a week out from exams, school offered their support however academics were still the main focus – which fair enough.

This opened many of our eyes to the unexpected events that can occur, and though rare anything can happen. So saying the occasional ‘I love you’ to your family isn’t that bad in the grand scheme of things.

How Your Family Can Help You Survive the HSC

  • Provide helpful advice on life experiences
  • Be brutally honest (especially on things to do with friends and relationships)
  • Be a trustworthy place to vent – I mean they won’t go to school and spill all your secrets
  • Cook really good food – but only if you’re super nice and ask politely!
  • Possibly help you out on school work, or find you help with a tutor from Art of Smart!
  • They also have many skills that some of us lack or need assistance with such as driving, washing clothes, cleaning and all that fun stuff!
  • Be someone to get out of the house with – whether it be a morning coffee run or just a simple walk around the block
  • Become your students – they can help you study by being someone to talk through, and teach your content to

It is important to take the time, whether it be just a few minutes to appreciate and thank your family for all they do. For most of us we are closest to our friends, they’re always around in school and we easily relate to them. In saying that much to our disagreement, our parents do have valuable life advice, I mean most have gone through it themselves. All we have to do is ask and I’m sure they’d love to talk about their time in high school.

Lilo and Stitch once taught us the meaning of Ohana:

“Ohana means family, family means no one gets left behind or forgotten”

To Parents

A slight disclaimer on behalf of all Year 12 students: Yes, we may go through some drastic mood swings and be a nightmare to deal with at times. However we know in the back of our minds that you are there for support, and we will seek help when we need it. Keep in mind we do appreciate every small thing you do for us, whether we always acknowledge it or not. Help us through the stress of this year and remember every kid goes through it differently.

At the end of the day…

If there’s one thing you take away from this post, be it that FAMILY MATTERS. Whether we like it or not they’re here for the long run unlike some of our friends which are always changing. For that we should thank and appreciate them as often as we can.

P.S. Mothers Day is May 14th this year, so maybe take that as a chance to thank her (but don’t forget about your dad too).

Good Luck!
